Mosquitoes in Rockwall and 8 Ways to Get Em’ Gone!

Living by the lake has its advantages here in Rockwall. We have beautiful scenery, great shopping, a huge lake and as our fellow Rockwallians love to say “we have the good ole Grandy’s”. But with the good comes the bad… Mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes love Rockwall and Rockwallians as well. Chandlers Landing is a popular mosquito hangout, as is The Shores, Largo Vista and we can’t forget the ever-loving Castle Ridge area. The truth is, mosquitoes will go anywhere that there’s water. They enjoy swimming just like the rest of us. As a matter of fact, the females of the “standing water” species will lay their eggs on the water. These tend to look like rafts.

You might be saying, “I don’t live by the lake, but I still have mosquitoes”. These mosquitoes may be part of the “floodwater” species. These insects will lay their eggs on plants or in the damp moist soil after a good rain or under a water source. It’s important to check for leaky pipes and empty those kiddie pools when done.

While both male and female enjoy sipping on the honeydew, nectar and fruit juices by the water; it’s actually the female that has that piercing blood-sucking bite. The adult female can carry and transmit diseases such as yellow fever, malaria and West Nile just to name a few.

It is also her saliva that makes the red itchy bump appear after piercing your skin.

So, whether you’re in Turtle Cove or Chisholm Crossing, it’s best to take preventative measures so mosquitoes don’t ruin your summer fun.
