A pest is more than that “one” person that must gossip about their (take a deep breath) roommate’s best friend’s aunt’s neighbors’ dog that stole a steak off a grill 7 years ago last week that nobody knows about (exhale and breathe).

Pests are classified differently than insects. Pests can be anything from a rodent, ant, or mosquito. They are disease-spreading, destructive nuisance organisms. Pests have been known to be the cause of epidemics and plagues. Bubonic plague was started from an infected flea.

Pests such as carpenter ants, rodents, and termites can cause damage to wood throughout your home. Weeds are unwanted in your lawn and can take over weak areas making it difficult to get rid of. Ticks, cockroaches, and mosquitoes spread disease and bacteria. All of which can be a costly headache if left untreated.

Insects, on the other hand, are beneficial to the ecosystem. They’re great pollinators, they aerate the soil, and feed on decomposing matter and other insects. Beetles, wasps, bees, and stink bugs all help in giving back to our beautiful planet. Dragonflies eat mosquitoes. Ladybugs eat aphids. Spiders capture and eat other insects and pests.

Some insects can be a pest when they are in their larvae stage but as they molt and mature, they become beneficial insects as an adult. (Sounds like some adults I’ve known since they were a teenager.)

Insects cause no harm to gardens, humans, or crops, unlike a pest that can cause harm to anything.
