What are Fleas?

Fleas are blood parasites that do not fly. They are approximately 0.12” long and move around by crawling or jumping.

The legs of a flea end in strong claws, allowing them to grasp their host and pierce the skin with their proboscis (tubular mouth). They use this to draw blood from their victims, and in the case of humans, leave behind a trail of raised and itchy skin in their wake.

Fleas are small insects that have a parasitic relationship with mammals and birds. They feed on the blood of the host, and reproduce in the host’s environment. Adult fleas are about the size and shape of the common grain of sand, with a flattened, leathery body, narrow hind legs, and small, feathery antennae. Their color ranges from reddish-brown to black, and they can jump a distance of up to 150 times their own length. Despite their size, fleas often are noticed only when they accumulate in large numbers as a result of feeding on a host animal.

How Can I Help With Flea Control?

There are different steps to take depending on what type of flea infestation you might have.

1. If your flea problem involves your animals (cats, dogs) before and after flea control has been applied, vacuum the beds where they sleep or areas of the carpet or furniture where they hang out during the day. If your pets sleep with you, you should do a thorough cleaning of your bedding as well as cleaning the carpets and floor in your bedroom, or any clothing left lying around. Vacuuming once a day can make a big impact by agitating the eggs. The eggs will hatch, and then the adults will then be ready to be sucked up by the vacuum. Vacuuming is as important as us treating the house and yards.
2. Treat your pets! You will need to bathe or have your animal treated with flea shampoo. It is also very important to purchase the pills that make the pet safe from fleas while they are taking them. These usually last a week or so. You may have to keep giving these to the pet until all fleas are gone.
3. Did we say vacuum? Please vacuum, then vacuum some more!

NOTE: Once the flea extermination is complete, keep cleaning the items listed above on a regular basis until you are certain that all of the insects have been successfully eradicated.
