Did you know that there are 2,500 known species of fleas worldwide, and one of them infiltrates humans? The body of a flea is flattened sideways (along the length of their body) which allows them to easily move through feathers, fur, or under human clothing.
Their ability to leap 14” inches horizontally and 7” vertically also makes it easy for them to move around and transfer themselves by leaping from host to host.

What are Fleas?
Fleas are blood parasites that do not fly. They are approximately 0.12” long and move around by crawling or jumping.
The legs of a flea end in strong claws, allowing them to grasp their host and pierce the skin with their proboscis (tubular mouth). They use this to draw blood from their victims, and in the case of humans, leave behind a trail of raised and itchy skin in their wake.
Flea Control Tips for Homeowners
How Can I Help With Flea Control?
There are different steps to take depending on what type of flea infestation you might have.
- If your flea problem involves your animals (cats, dogs) before and after flea control has been applied, vacuum the beds where they sleep or areas of the carpet or furniture where they hang out during the day. If your pets sleep with you, you should do a thorough cleaning of your bedding as well as cleaning the carpets and floor in your bedroom, or any clothing left lying around. Vacuuming once a day can make a big impact by agitating the eggs. The eggs will hatch, and then the adults will then be ready to be sucked up by the vacuum. Vacuuming is as important as us treating the house and yards.
- Treat your pets! You will need to bathe or have your animal treated with flea shampoo. It is also very important to purchase the pills that make the pet safe from fleas while they are taking them. These usually last a week or so. You may have to keep giving these to the pet until all fleas are gone.
- Did we say vacuum? Please vacuum, then vacuum some more!
NOTE: Once the flea extermination is complete, keep cleaning the items listed above on a regular basis until you are certain that all of the insects have been successfully eradicated.
